The Davis Funeral Home was established in 1950 by George W. Davis, who after working for the Walker family for many years, purchased the Captain Boynton home on McCann Street from the Vigeant family. The stately home was built in the early 1880’s by Captain Lewis R. Boynton, a Great Lakes steamship captain, and has been restored, remodeled, and maintained by its owner since that time. George Davis was joined by his son Robert, and the corporation was owned by them, until December of 1969, when Bruce J. Dodson came to St. Ignace from the central Michigan area and purchased the business. This is our 41st year of operation.
In September of 1971, Bruce purchased the Walker Brothers Funeral Home from David and Ronald Walker, closing that establishment and combining the business, then known as the Davis/Dodson Funeral Home. The building has undergone several additions and upgrades including living quarters, garages, additional property, and redecorating. The building is handicap accessible, and complies with the ADA act of 1992.
In 1997 we combined businesses with Pat O’Neill in Sault Ste. Marie, owner of Clark Bailey Newhouse Funeral Home forming O’Neill Ventures, Inc. Bruce and Carolyn Dodson continue to operate as Dodson Funeral Home, and welcome your comments as to how we can serve you better. Again, “Our Family Serving Yours”.
